Kick It is solid, but I wish the entire track had been as unhinged as its final moments. With these kinds of tracks, NCT 127 are at their best when they throw everything at the wall. The instrumental warps into a demented breakdown, kicking up a grimy funk. Just as Kick It’s bridge is about to segue into the final chorus, the song delivers the kind of musical madness I was hoping for. The second verse does a better job hitting us with unexpected aural exclamation points, though it could have embraced its inherent oddness even more. Thankfully, its guitar distortion backbone keeps things compelling. Its first verse subscribes too heavily to the kind of skeletal trap that everyone’s already doing. The song loses me a bit when it slows down. Its chorus is memorable from the very first listen, even if it relies more on energy and novelty than well-developed hooks. Still, I think Kick It is at its best when it goes over the top. Into submission than gradually draw us in. Verses feel needlessly aggressive, as if the guys would rather pummel us It’s a loud track, filled with chants about Bruce LeeĪnd “new thangs,” and it’s more than a little silly. Kick Itįeels like a catchier, more approachable version of the style 127 built The song is a bit disappointing for those of us who adored the group’s more pop-minded material last year, but it also suits them so well. You can check out Taeyong’s contribution to NCT 127’s choreography for “Kick It” in the clip below! (The “action scene” begins at approximately 3:08 in the video. This is both a blessing and a curse. A day after NCT 127 dropped their highly-anticipated second album, NCT 127 NEO ZONE, the girls were jamming to Kick It in Kia’s bathroom, getting ready to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Koosung Jung went on to praise Taeyong for his dancing skills, which he described as being on par with choreographers. Later on, I saw on the music shows and in their music video that stepped on his knee and threw a punch while jumping.” “So I told, ‘The two of you should discuss it amongst yourselves and go with what you think is best.’ I left the decision up to them. Would you be okay with that?’ And he replied, ‘Of course, I can do it.’ It might be dangerous for you to have to do that move every time you perform the song. The choreographer recalled, “I told him, ‘That would definitely make the dance look great, but it seems like it could be a little dangerous. “He personally suggested the idea, saying, ‘I think it would really bring the scene to life if Mark stepped on me and jumped off.’ He came up with the idea himself.” “Taeyong is extremely passionate, and he’s someone who has a lot of ideas,” he said. The choreographer then revealed that it was Taeyong who had come up with the idea of adding that extra element to the sequence in order to make it even more climactic. That part didn’t exist in the original choreography that I came up with.” “However,” he continued, “there’s a part where Taeyong lies on the floor and has Mark jump off his knee. I wanted to portray this action through the dance.” He hits and hits, and everyone takes the blows. Koosung Jung explained, “Mark comes into the center, and it’s like he’s the main character in a fight scene. As all of the other members stand around him in a circle, Mark pretends to fight and defeat his bandmates before jumping off Taeyong’s thigh towards the front of the stage with a dramatic kick. One of the most memorable moments of the performance, the martial-arts “action scene” takes place at the end of the “Kick It” dance break. At one point during the interview, he shared the origin story behind what he dubbed the “action scene” part of the choreography. In a recent interview with fellow choreographer Mina Myoung, Koosung Jung talked about his experience working on NCT 127’s choreography for their latest title track. According to choreographer Koosung Jung, NCT 127’s Taeyong was the mastermind behind one of the coolest parts of their choreography for “ Kick It“!
